Staff Profile: James White
Tell us a bit about you and what you hope to bring to AUA.
I am a sport loving individual, studying at the University of Canberra, and commenced my role as the Operations Manager of Abilities Unlimited Australia, in January 2022. I hope to bring many great things to AUA, but for the most part, I would love to provide positive, life changing opportunities for children with additional needs; with the aim of increasing the number of children and families through our programs each term.
What is the best part of working with children at AUA?
Working with the children in our programs is an absolute pleasure. I am lucky enough to see the highs, the lows, and all of the ups and downs in between. I love seeing the smiles on the children's faces, it is truly heartwarming. However, nothing beats seeing a child pedal for the first time, push themselves on a skateboard, or simply balance from one end of the basketball court to the other. Progress comes at different speeds, and all progress, whether it be small or large is inspiring and equally amazing.
What do you find is the best way to bring out the best in the children you support?
Supporting children is a key and critical component within our programs. I find that supporting each and every child to the best of our ability is possible through building connections, understanding interests, and being aware of their individual circumstances. Each child is different, and tailoring our approaches and strategies assists us in empowering and inspiring each and every child.
Describe one of your best AUA memories?
There are many many memories that I could discuss. However, the one memory that comes to mind immediately is seeing a child who had never being able to pedal before; pedal unassisted, use their brakes to stop safely, and scream out in pure joy that they had 'smashed it'. Every week this child enters this program with a smile on their face, a true belief that they can continue to improve and better their riding skills, and feel confident in themselves.
How would describe the feeling you get when you see a child pick up a new skill?
In some ways, it is indescribable. While it is one of the best feelings to see the excitement and joy in the child's face, it is equally amazing to see the reactions of parent's and carers. I can truly feel how proud they (parents/carers) are, and am so lucky to be able to witness and be a part of this.
What is one thing you have learned or shared with others in the AUA team?
I have learn't many things while working at AUA. One thing that always comes to mind however, is that every individual action, and every person within our organisation plays a role in positively contributing to the lives of many - we are a community, a big family.
What are three things you would like to achieve as the Ops Manager in the next 12 months?
Should I create a list (ha-ha)? On a serious note, (a) I would love to increase the number of children we work with and are able to offer programs to, (b) provide additional resources and assistance to parents and carers in relation to a range of skills and how to resources, and (c) assist in positive ways to ensue that the AUA bike precinct is up and running and open for the wider community to use.
If you had one superpower what would it be.
To fly - I am scared of heights, but being able to fly from one place to another would be amazing. The freedom, the feeling of being able to see the world, and all that comes with it.
Do you have any pets? What traits do you have that is like them?
Yes - two high energy Kelpies. Both spoilt, and equally sooky. I love that dogs live their lives to the fullest. Every day is as exciting as the next. They live simple lives, but happy lives.
Best holiday destination?
There are many places in the world I have been, but I can't go past Croatia and Greece in the European Summer. Amazing landscapes, beaches, weather, and food! The people are also so lovely and welcoming.
