New All-Abilities Bike Precinct Set to Revolutionise Inclusive Cycling in Canberra

Get ready for an exciting new addition to Canberra’s recreational landscape—the All-Abilities Bike Precinct, a space designed specifically to make cycling accessible, inclusive, and safe for children of all abilities! Officially launching on Sunday, December 8, 2024, as part of the AUA Empowering All Abilities Day, this precinct aims to break down barriers, offering children with disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to enjoy the freedom and empowerment that comes with riding a bike.

Located at Evatt Primary School, the bike precinct is more than just a track—it’s a comprehensive environment that caters to cyclists of all skill levels and abilities. Children will be able to participate in Learn-to-Ride sessions, practice road safety on a dedicated road safety track, and gain confidence in a supportive setting designed for their unique needs. From adaptive bicycles to specialised coaching, this precinct will help children with physical, sensory, or cognitive challenges develop essential cycling skills.

A Space for All Riders

What makes the All-Abilities Bike Precinct stand out is its inclusive design. Whether children are using standard bikes, e-bikes, or adaptive cycles, they’ll be able to practice and grow at their own pace. The precinct offers safe, accessible paths that promote independence and self-confidence—two crucial elements in childhood development.

In partnership with Abilities Unlimited Australia (AUA), ACT Government Sport and Recreation, and Evatt Primary School, the precinct also focuses heavily on road safety education, helping children become comfortable with important rules of the road. Families, sports clubs, and cycling organisations will join forces to offer demonstrations, workshops, and “come-and-try” sessions, turning the launch into a festival of cycling fun.

Community Collaboration for Lasting Impact

The All-Abilities Bike Precinct is more than just a place to ride bikes—it's a collaborative effort from local cycling clubs, community organisations, and government bodies. From sports clubs, arts organisations and cycling groups to local bike shops and safety organisations like Kenny Koala, the day will feature a variety of interactive sessions that ensure every child feels supported and empowered.

A Lasting Legacy

The All-Abilities Bike Precinct is a major step forward in making Canberra a more inclusive city. For children who may have felt left out or sidelined in traditional sports environments, this precinct offers a new beginning—a chance to participate, build skills, and develop a love for cycling that will last a lifetime.

This bike precinct launch is just the beginning. With continued support from local businesses, cycling enthusiasts, and community organisations, it aims to become a cornerstone of inclusive recreation in Canberra for years to come.

How to Get Involved

Cycling organisations, volunteers, and businesses are still invited to contribute to this ground-breaking initiative. Whether by sponsoring, volunteering, or donating bikes and equipment, there are many ways to make a lasting impact.

Join us on December 8th for the launch of the All-Abilities Bike Precinct, and be part of a community that celebrates inclusivity, accessibility, and the joy of cycling for everyone!
